Room for improvement in animal protection laws: report
Our province has slipped a bit in the estimation of some animal welfare activists. The Animal Legal Defense Fund has released its annual report, which says Quebec, PEI, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories are the best places in Canada for animal abusers. Last year, the group included New Brunswick in its 'top tier', or places where laws protecting animals have real teeth. But we've now slipped from third in the country to sixth, into the so-called 'middle tier'. The Animal Legal Defense Fund makes several recommendations for the province, including a broader range of protections, increased penalties for repeat offenders, and mandatory seizure of mistreated animals.
