Murder suspect pleads guilty to manslaughter

A Saint John man will be sentenced next month in relation to a fatal shooting in the port city a couple weeks ago. Matthew Foley, 50, was originally charged with second-degree murder in the death of 31-year-old Michael Schimpf, but yesterday pled guilty to manslaughter. Foley insisted he only meant to scare the victim when he fired shots in his direction; the accused claimed Schimpf had thrown rocks at him the previous day and, he believes, also threw bricks through the window of his tattoo shop a few days earlier.
